That thing looks rusted through. Did it get hit by something?

That looks really odd, something must have happend to break that piece off.

I hear you man, messed up feeling when you think everything is alright under the hood and something goes wrong.

I'm thinking that stress or heat broke it off. There was a sequence of events that happened after this which REALLY gives me a headache.

1. Belt falls off and I dont notice the temp going up (waterpump not flowing). I was probably driving 20-30secs in the red. So I pull over.

2. Call a friend and get a new belt, drives fine for a little while.

3. A few miles down the road, I give it full throttle. Take a look back, and all I see is white smoke.

4. Pull over ASAP, shut her off, leave it at a friends aunt's house for the weekend.

5. Towed it home today and start ripping off my head....

I'm thinking the heat warped the head, blew the head gasket, and now must resurface the head. This is 2 weeks before I move to WSU for school. I am thinking of not taking my car over there. I'll fix it this week/next week and leave it, even thinking of selling it (not toooo sure yet...). Ideas? WSU is located in a town in Eastern Washington, it snows a lot over there, and the car would not be functional.... Kind of needed to vent....

I'd say you are correct in what you said happened. :(
About the crack on the belt drive part of trigger wheel, that looks rusted through and was bound to brake off. Get a new one and check the head.

You have a very unique car that you put a lot of work into, I would never sell it if I were you. I would get a daily beater to drive, I've got my E28 518i which cost me $300 and I'm loving it. :)

I agree don't sell the e30 just because of this setback.
You should get a daily driver like he said and keep that unique e30 of yours.

And I've never even heard of a 518i. Must be slow as hell, but as a daily driver who cares.

Matt, you should get a daily driver. I could never get by if I didn't have at least two cars so that down time on one of them wouldn't stop me. Keep an eye out for a decent 318i or something. It doesn't have to be a rocket ship, that's your other car. :D

Yeah, an E28 518i is not the fastest car on the block. The almighty M10 1.8 litre with super accurate fuel injection provided by K-jetronic. At least I'm over the 100 hp mark. :)
It's a very comfortable car and still handles pretty good. Power steering, power windows, sun roof and a decent stereo. And it all works like clockwork, the perfect beater.

Sorry to hear the bad news, yeah i agree you definately need a beater car. Probably all of us turbocharged guys have thought about selling are cars at one point, because of stupid things happening. Its still a cheap, and easy fix so i say keep your car.

damn matt. i feel bad man. that is realy weird how that happened. sucks that that had to be the trigger for the problems. please dont give up on the car though. maybe find a metro or something to drive in the mean time? :)

We don't have the 518i in the United States.
The low end e28 for us was the 528e.

Just like we never got the 315 or 316, the 324td/d, the 628, the 728, and a host of others.

We did get the 324td in the U.S. I know for a fact because that's what I'm getting the manifold off of for my turbo install. And the place I'm getting it from is a local junkyard.

Now you will have headaches when you try to check/change your spark plugs if you mount the turbo upside
