im ganna skip the discussion on why there isnt one or why there should be one, but the truth is mine is a daily driver and its not easy while driving a manual with a soda in your hand and your cell phone rings.
so, what options are there.. ive seen some that you bolt onto near the front ashtray, ive seen some where you stick it to the right inner side of center console (it goes to the left of the passengers left knee). whats the most reliable one? i would assume the one you stick onto the wall might come off... but then i dont want to really drill or make holes into the center console.

the easiest solution to this problem is A. leave the cell at home. B. leave the soda at home. C. grow another arm.

Personaly I think they all look rather goofy. I have not tried to put a cup holder in my e30, but attemps in other cars proved that holding it was the safest solution. I hold the soda between my leggs if I need my other hand. Or it fits nicely between the seat and center concole.

to explain the g-spot on an older european car is the place that you can put a drink and it wont spill me and my friend that drives an older volvo have spent many days(few min.) finding this holy grail of european cars and the best place i have found to put your drink is...
between the door and the seat i haven't spilt a drink yet

Another place this for cans only is above your ash tray below the heat controls a can of soda fits perfect here.
Or stick your drink beetween the seat and the console it will never spill.

You people are so uncreative its disgusting. What kinda old car owner cant RIG something up?
I chose to modify the E32 one so it would work on the pocket behind the ebrake. The beauty of it is I can pull it off the lip and toss it in the glovebox (where its spends 95% of its time).

perhaps you should add rigged cup holder to your list of mods. I choose not to have a cupholder in my car as I don't need or want one.

well like i said, i need one at times becuase its my only car.
i dont like putting it between my legs, because its cold and it gets wet (im being serious, it does). and putting it between the seat and the center console has not been too successful for me, my leather is old and doesnt have grip so i have to jam whatever drink i have into it and if it slips it pops out spilling the contents, and with big drinks they get in the way of shifting. i havnt tried the "between the door and seat" method, ill try that next. as far as a can in the part between the heater knobs and ashtray... i could have sworn a can doesnt fit.. i remember trying that.
ryans modified e32 cupholder sounds like the best solution though... ill have to look into that.

i sit mine between my seat belt and the e-brake..it works fine. Also, between the seat and the door..havent spilled any yet. But i understand where your coming from with the "it gets hard driving a manual while holding a soda". Although its usually water i'm holding..not soda.

hehe, once i was holding a pepsi can with my left hand and both hads were on the steering whell.. so i was holding the can with index and thumb and the other 3 fingers were on the steering wheel. i was talking and sort of forgot about it, so i went to make a right turn, and completely forgot about the soda. the result: the can went up with my hand and once it hit a certain height/tilt gravity did the rest. pepsi all over my center console and right arm.

well now that someone got thier panties in a bunch over cupholders we can move on.
I like the E32 cupholder for two reasons:
1. my water bottle isnt sweating condensation all over my perfect interior.
2. It doesnt involved drilling any holes or sticking any glue to the interior. I just pull it off and toss it in the glovebox, or remove it completly on trackdays (for the one who was ragging).

I put mine in the little space between the back corner of the passenger seat and the seat belt catch, in between them. Never spilled a drop.
Then again, I never had a drink in my car, unless I was picking up drive-thru to take home. You better not be having open drinks in your car, you silly person.

Ya, that's pretty cool..
If I don't have a passenger, I put it in between the seat and the hand-brake console thing.. Just wedge it in there.. 8)

Go to your local VW dealer and ask for a cup holder for the 93-97 Passat. It has mounting tabs that will slip under the side of your console and screws hold it in place. Send me a PM for pics of it. I have used one of these in every car I've owned that had crappy cupholders.
Check it out...oh it holds two drinks.

In between your legs....cupholders have no place in automobiles ;)
