View Full Version : Missing Head Bolt

Nothing seems to be warped/blown. Anybody ever had this problem before? I'm thinking I'm going to need to replace the head gasket and all the bolts, rather than just put a new bolt there...

its just missing?!? are you certian that its not possibly broken off int he head?

if your going to replace your head bolts, id recomend a slight upgrade. get some 150mm long, m10, 1.5 pitch, hex socket, metric blue grade 12.9 head bolts. there about 9 bux for a bag of 5, so total its about 32 with shipping and there much stronger that stock head bolts. they are allso non tapered and non stretching. (stock head bolts are grade 10.2 and they are tapered. you can get them at http://www.mcmaster.com/

Cool. I just assumed it was missing. It very well could've broken off. The thing is, I didn't notice the bolt anywhere by the valvetrain...

iv heard very negitive things from the owner of Ierland engeneering about them.... they sent them the wrong size, sent them back, got the wrong pitch, sent them back, got the right size and pirtch but not all the bolts would thread.....

The hex-head bolts were infamous for breaking off. The torx heads are their replacement, and I haven't heard of them having problems. Unless you're doign some extreme application, I'd suggest those...

Loose bits in the engine can go all kinds of places. Did you pull the head? Is the entire bolt missing?

It was just the head that broke off. I got the washer out from a crevice in the valve train, but the head is gone. I'm getting a new head bolt, though! Must have been some extreme valve work the previous owner was doing... I have his address. I should go see him!
