Default Wiring Diagram for Starter Motor / Solenoid

Hi Guys - First off -Does anyone have a diagram or pic of the wiring for the Starter Motor / Solenoid for a 1989 320i Automatic Thank you, still battling with grounding problem for unloader relays K5 and K7. The mechanic who repaired and installed the starter motor says it is wired up correctly but I am not confident.

On my car there are 5 wires Thick Black and Thick Red which go to a common stud, these are I suppose the power.

The other 3 are thin wires one red and two black, any ideas as to what these are ? I know from searching the forum that these wire colours are not standard.

Thanks in advance.

After quite a bit of searching all I found was the part number, and most of the pages are in another language.

I'll keep searching.

LOL, I think he is referring to a wiring diagram.

Ok, the red and black heavy gauge wires do indeed go to a common stud.

Typically you will have 2 smaller gauge wires. It could be that the red one is not a factory wire. This could be the source of your problem, you may want to trace it and find out where it originates.

You have a black with yellow that goes to the lower stud, this is your 'start signal'

The next one is a smaller black with green wire that goes on the upper stud, this is the 'unloader' relay trigger wire.

When you crank the engine the upper stud goes HOT, this is what triggers your unloader relays.

Sometimes the actual contact on the starter is physically damaged and the stud will NOT go Hot and your unloader relays will not trigger. When they are not hot they are ground. If the circuit is not working correctly typically you will loose your power windows, power mirrors, sunroof, blower motor, etc....

Here is your wiring diagram you wanted. Its for a US 325i but the starter wiring 'should' remain(s) the same.

What is the problem? Does it not even kick over? Things are probably hooked up right. It's actually hard to get them wrong.

engine grounds are your friend.

He might not have the same unloader scheme as we have in the US.
oomtom, before your problem, were you able to lower your windows, play your radio, and have your fan blow when you were cranking the ignition?

Thank you for responding guys.

Promotor - The starting works fine and the car runs Ok. It's the electric windows that dont work with the doors closed etc.

Colin86325 - I never tried those things whilst cranking the ignition but everything worked before the starter motor was overhauled, the cylinder head done and the gearbox overhauled. It has been an expensive couple of months.

Peerless - "Typically you will have 2 smaller gauge wires. It could be that the red one is not a factory wire. This could be the source of your problem, you may want to trace it and find out where it originates."

I have 3 smaller guage wires ? A black wire which is secured under a nut to a stud on the left hand side.

A black wire which has a spade connector and is attached to the bottom (lower) ( start signal ? ).

A yellow wire which has a spade connector and is attached to the top (upper ) ( unloader ).

Peerless - "When you crank the engine the upper stud goes HOT, this is what triggers your unloader relays". Can I measure this voltage with my volt meter to ground?

Once the engine is running can I remove one of these wires (which one ?) and ground it to see if the Heater Fan, Electric mirrors now work ?

Again thank you all for your help and patience.

Thanks protomor - With the engine running is it possible to ground one of the thin wires to see if it is a grounding problem ? If so which one bearing in mind my wire colours seem to be non standard.
